Successful Alert
Daily News of Sri Lanka report on the successful alert on Sunday June 13th. A strong earthquake in the Indian Ocean prompted the Disaster Management Centre of Sri Lanka to issue an alert at 01.05 a.m. Emergency Operations Centre Assistant Director Pradeep Kodippily said that the warning was given through the 55 towers across the coastal belt of the Island Nation. At 02:00 a.m. the warning was withdrawn and the population could go back to rest. The early warning and response system was put in place by ICET and various large scale exercises with the DMC and the local communities had left no doubt that the system would work effectively. This alert was the first ‘no-play’ warning and proof of a significant step forward that the Government of Sri Lanka has made to provide the public with improved safety. Additional towers and training will be put in place later in 2010 and 2011. ICET is proud to be Sri Lanka’s partner in this important project.
